Its plot seems tailored to the collective disillusionment of an era: toward the end of World War I, a Scottish soldier named Plumpick, played by Alan Bates, enters a small French village that has been rigged by the German Army to explode. Looking back after half a century, how easy it is to imagine that King of Hearts must have been the ideal movie for its moment. These questions occurred to me as I blew the dust off my DVD of Philippe de Broca’s King of Hearts and tried to view it simultaneously from 19. What, so far, is the defining movie of the Trump era? Is it Get Out, which takes on contemporary America with a mixture of disbelieving laughter and outright horror? Is it Wonder Woman, which gives us a savior in the person of a tough, powerful female lead? Is it La La Land, which just wants to get away from it all? And more to the point, is the label “defining movie of the Trump era” actually a death sentence that will only make a movie look more quaint and dated when future generations excavate it? As the masterpieces, pathbreakers, and oddities of that landmark year reach their golden anniversaries, I’ll try to offer a sense of what it might have felt like to be an avid moviegoer 50 years ago, discovering these films as they opened. Given adequate moisture, the foliage remains attractive in summer, and may produce an attractive ground cover effect. Flowering may continue throughout the summer in cool northern climates. Louis, primary bloom is in May and June, with flowering slowing down considerably or stopping in the heat of the summer, but with a possible rebloom occurring when the weather cools in late summer to early fall. Nodding, heart-shaped, rich carmine-rose flowers are carried above the foliage to 10-15” tall on long, leafless, erect to slightly leaning stems. It typically produces a foliage mound to 6-8” tall and 14” wide of deeply-cut, fern-like, bluish-green leaves that persists throughout the growing season. ‘King of Hearts’ is a compact bleeding heart hybrid cultivar resulting from a cross of the Japanese species D. Flowers in the genus Dicentra are commonly called bleeding heart because protruding inner petals, more obvious in some species than others, purportedly appear to form a drop of blood at the bottom of each heart-shaped flower. Genus name comes from the Greek words dis meaning twice and kentron meaning a spur for the two-spurred flowers. eximea (native to woodland areas of eastern North America) in which the goal was to produce a dicentra with a compact and robust habit, long flowering period, blue-gray foliage and quality flower colors. peregrine (native to alpine areas of China and eastern Siberia) and D. Plants feature pendant, two-spurred, heart-shaped flowers atop mounds of deeply dissected leaves.Ī number of cultivars have been produced in recent years which are hybrid crosses between D. Dicentra is a genus of 20 or more species of annual and perennial herbaceous flowering plants which are native to moist woodland areas in Asia and North America.
